Garden Room

This Oxfordshire family wanted a garden room that could be used in very different ways: a place to entertain, to relax, and, for one very keen dancer in the household, a space where proper dance practice could happen at home.

The room needed to feel connected to the main house and garden, but also work as a self-contained, flexible space that could change throughout the day. Our solution was to design a space that was highly flexible.

We designed the layout around that flexibility. A professional sprung dance floor was installed so the client could practise and host events on a surface designed to support movement. The sofas were selected and positioned so they can be easily moved back, allowing the room to transform from a comfortable living area into a clear dance floor whenever needed.

A bespoke bar area gives the room a social focus, making it equally well suited to entertaining friends and family. Large areas of glazing bring in light and maintain a strong connection to the garden, so the space feels open and calm when used for relaxation, and lively when in use for dance or gatherings.

The colour palette was chosen to support this dual role. Dark architectural tones give the large room a sense of structure and intimacy, while bold orange accent colours add energy and warmth, reflecting both its social and active uses.

The finished garden room has become one of the most versatile parts of the home — a place to host, move, practise and unwind. It’s a clear example of how thoughtful space planning and tailored design can create a room that truly suits the people who use it.
