The Great Office Rethink

Why Your Workspace Needs to Feel More Like Home

A modern office interior

The beige, soulless expanse of cubicles under the hum of fluorescent lighting is officially a relic of the past. For years, the traditional office was a place of function over feeling, a space we endured rather than enjoyed. Then, everything changed. The global shift to remote work gave employees a taste of something different: a workspace curated by them, for them. Their comfortable chair, their favourite mug, the plant on their desk, the ambient glow of a lamp – they created personal sanctuaries of productivity.

Their comfortable chair, their favourite mug, the plant on their desk, the ambient glow of a lamp – they created personal sanctuaries of productivity. Now, as companies navigate the new era of hybrid working, a critical question has emerged: how do you persuade talented people to leave the comfort of their bespoke home office?

The answer isn't free snacks or a foosball table. It's a fundamental reimagining of the workplace itself. Here at Flippa Interiors, we've been at the forefront of this evolution, helping forward-thinking companies create environments that don't just accommodate work but actively inspire it. Welcome to the age of "resimercial" design, where work just got cool.

Introducing ‘Resimercial’: The Hybrid Your Office Has Been Waiting For

Over the last few years, nearly every Commercial Interior Design project we’ve undertaken has come with the same request: create a ‘resimercial’ space. The term might be industry jargon, but the concept is beautifully simple. It’s a purposeful blend of ‘residential’ and ‘commercial’ design, taking all the best bits of home and thoughtfully integrating them into the office.

The goal is to lure employees back with a space that prioritises their well-being, comfort, and flexibility. Imagine walking into an office that feels nurturing and calming. This is achieved through:

  • Tactile Textures: Soft velvets, warm woods, woven fabrics, and plush rugs that are inviting to the touch.
  • Comfortable & Varied Seating: Sofas you can actually sink into and chairs that support but don't feel clinical.
  • Ambient Lighting: Replacing harsh overhead glare with the soft, layered glow of floor lamps and stylish pendants.
  • Homely Accessories: Incorporating elements we’d traditionally associate with the home, such as curated art, decorative cushions, living plants, and elegant bookshelves.

This approach transforms a sterile office into a destination—a place people want to be.

Are You Sitting Comfortably? The New Rules of Office Seating

"Sitting comfortably" used to mean one thing: an adjustable, ergonomic chair tethered to a single desk. Today, that definition has exploded. With laptops and wireless technology freeing us from a fixed spot, the modern office offers a landscape of seating options designed for every type of task and mood.

Our Office Interior Design schemes now feature a host of flexible choices:

  • Banquette Benches: Perfect for communal dining areas, encouraging teams to eat and connect together.
  • Cosy Corners: Armchairs tucked away for deep, focused conversations or a quiet moment of reflection.
  • Comfortable Sofas: Ideal for informal team chats, creative brainstorming sessions, or simply taking a comfortable break.
  • Quiet Booths: Acoustic-panelled nooks where a worker can escape the buzz and concentrate without distractions.

At Flippa Interiors, we understand that style must be supported by substance. All fabrics used in commercial settings must be fire-rated to Crib 5 to meet legislation. We partner with a wealth of fabulous suppliers who can manufacture bespoke seating, ensuring your design is not only safe and compliant but also unique to your company’s brand and culture.

More Than a Desk: Designing for Wellbeing and Productivity

Interior designers like us, who work across both commercial and residential projects, are witnessing a fascinating crossover. Domestic comforts are no longer a luxury in the workplace; they are a strategic necessity. Employers increasingly understand that staff wellbeing has a direct and powerful correlation to happiness, creativity, and, ultimately, productivity.

A healthy working environment is a holistic one. We’ve designed expansive communal dining areas with large, rustic tables that foster inclusivity and a sense of camaraderie. In a unique project for an independent boarding school, we were asked to design a sophisticated bar area within the teachers' common room, creating a dedicated space for informal, sociable gatherings after a long day.

It’s the small details that make the biggest impact. Including plenty of plants in our schemes—a practice known as biophilic design—helps to soften spaces, feels inherently uplifting, and is proven to combat air pollution. We layer in rugs to define zones and add warmth, hang original artwork to inspire, and pay special attention to ambient lighting to cultivate a supportive and comfortable atmosphere. These creature comforts don't just change how a workspace looks; they fundamentally change how it feels.

Your Brand, Your Space: Weaving Company Values into the Walls

A generic, off-the-shelf office says very little about your company. Working with an interior designer for your office fit-out is an opportunity to turn your physical space into a powerful storytelling tool. Your company's branding, mission, and values can be expertly reflected in the very fabric of the interiors.

This can be done in bold or subtle ways. Brand colours can be introduced through a feature wall, echoed gently in soft furnishing fabrics, or used as an accent in bespoke joinery. We believe in creating spaces with a true sense of place and identity. For one client, we commissioned a fine artist to illustrate a magnificent, custom mural wallpaper for their lobby, depicting local landmarks and telling the story of their community. It immediately sets the tone and makes an unforgettable first impression.

A Touch of Home for a Brighter Future of Work

The line between commercial and residential design is disappearing for a reason. Workplaces that embrace a home-like feel are being favoured by employers and employees alike because they are proven to reduce stress, spark collaboration, and boost creativity.

By thoughtfully curating a space with accessories, textures, and lighting more commonly found in a home, you create a nurturing environment where people feel valued and supported. You give them a reason to choose the office.
