Why your home matters more than you think
What if we told you that your home has a greater impact on your happiness than your salary? Or that how you feel about your living space affects your wellbeing more profoundly than the job you do every day? You might be a little surprised.
In our fast-paced world, we often prioritise our careers, finances, and social lives, sometimes seeing our home as little more than a backdrop—a place to sleep, eat, and store our belongings. But what if that perspective is holding us back from a happier, more fulfilled life?
Here at Flippa Interiors, we’ve always believed in the transformative power of a well-designed home. Now, compelling research from the Happiness Research Institute* has revealed something remarkable that confirms this belief: our homes account for a staggering 15% of our total happiness. This makes them as important as our general health and fitness, and significantly more influential than our income or career.
The study, a comprehensive survey of over 13,000 people across Europe, found a powerful correlation: 73% of people who are happy with their home are also happy in life. This isn't a coincidence. It's proof that our homes are not passive environments; they are active participants in our emotional and mental health.
The Five Pillars of a Happy Home
The research identified five core emotional needs that our homes must meet for us to feel truly content: pride, comfort, identity, control, and safety.
For us, the top three resonated deeply with the challenges our clients face every day. They form the very foundation of what makes a house a home:
- Pride (44% of home happiness): This is the single biggest contributor. It’s that feeling of looking around and being genuinely proud of the space you have created. It’s the joy of inviting friends over and knowing your home is a beautiful, welcoming place.
- Comfort (25%): This goes far beyond a comfy sofa. It’s about creating an environment that provides both physical and emotional comfort—a sanctuary that soothes, recharges, and simply feels good to be in. It's about how a space functions for your daily life.
- Identity (17%): A happy home is one that tells your story. It should be a true reflection of your personality, your values, and your personal journey. It’s the difference between a generic show-home and a space that feels authentically yours.
The Illusion of Space: Why Size Isn't Everything
One of the study's most fascinating discoveries challenges a common assumption in the world of property and design. While many of us crave more square footage, the research showed that the feeling of spaciousness is three times more important than the actual size of a home.
In fact, twenty percent of people don't feel their home is spacious, regardless of its dimensions. This highlights a common design trap: you can have a large house that feels cluttered and cramped, or a smaller apartment that feels open, airy, and expansive.
This is where professional space planning becomes invaluable. It’s a design tool that allows us to make a restricted space feel bigger without altering its physical proportions.
Take our clients, Stuart and Claire, for example. They came to us unhappy with a home that felt cramped and disconnected, a space that simply didn’t reflect their vibrant family life. Our solution wasn’t to build an extension. Instead, we re-imagined the existing footprint. We relocated their kitchen from a dark, north-facing front room to the back of the house. Here, we designed a fluid, open-plan kitchen, dining, and snug area. By installing large Crittal-style windows, we flooded the new space with natural light and created a seamless connection to the garden. A carefully considered colour palette, chosen specifically for them, tied it all together.
Although the footprint of the house remained the same, the result was transformative. We had created that crucial feeling of spaciousness through light, views, and intelligent flow between zones.
Designing for You, With You
A variety of problems bring clients to us, but they often boil down to those core emotional needs. They feel their home does not reflect them (a lack of Pride and Identity), is not working well in terms of layout or function (Comfort), or they are struggling to articulate their own style (Identity).
That’s why our interior design process is so personal. We start each new project by exploring our client’s colour psychology and style preferences using our in-depth questionnaire. Crucially, we take the time to understand their lifestyle and daily habits. This approach uncovers authentic preferences, even when clients don't have the design vocabulary to express them, and allows us to design a space that is a true reflection of who they are.
5 Simple Ideas to Boost Your Home Happiness Today
Of course, not everyone is ready for a full design project. Yet with 1 in 4 of us in the UK not satisfied with our living spaces, making small changes can have a big impact. Here are five ideas to get you started:
- Invest in What Makes You Proud: Focus your time and budget on elements that will make you smile every time you see them. This doesn't have to be a grand gesture. It could be a statement wall in a colour you adore, a gallery of meaningful artwork, or simply a beautifully organised and decluttered bookshelf.
- Conduct a 'Self-Expression' Audit: Walk through your home and ask yourself: "Does this space tell my story?" If your personality feels lost in generic décor, find ways to display your passions. Showcase your book collection, hang your travel photos, or display a treasured collection. Make your space uniquely personal.
- Maximise Your Sense of Space: Use mirrors strategically to bounce light around a room. Choose lighter colours for walls to create an airy feel. Declutter ruthlessly and ensure every room has good, layered lighting. Sometimes, simply rearranging the furniture can make a room feel significantly larger.
- Take Control (Even if You Rent): Focus on changes you can make. Removable wallpaper can add personality without permanence. Investing in beautiful lamps, plush rugs, and high-quality textiles can transform a space. The key is to have areas where your decisions create a visible impact that brings you joy.
- Design for Your Real Life: Be honest about how you and your family live. Do you need a dedicated homework station, an entertainment zone, a quiet reading corner, or a clear space to exercise? Design your home around your real behaviours, not the idealised versions you might see in magazines.
Whether you're ready for a complete transformation or looking to make targeted improvements, the key is understanding that every design decision should serve both form and function while deeply reflecting you.
A home isn't just where you live—it's where you thrive. In a world that demands more and more of our attention, creating a space that serves as your personal sanctuary isn't a luxury. In our opinion, it's essential for your wellbeing.
