6 Simple Styling Tips to Elevate Your Home

Do you ever scroll through images of flawlessly designed homes and wish you could bottle that magic for your own space? That feeling of calm, cohesion, and effortless style isn’t reserved for magazines. With a little interior designer know-how, you can transform your home into a sanctuary that feels both beautiful and deeply personal.

At Flippa Interiors, we believe that exceptional design is built on a foundation of smart principles. I’m Philippa Sale, an interior designer and founder of Flippa Interiors, and I want to pull back the curtain on professional interior styling. You don’t need a complete overhaul to make a significant impact. Often, it’s the thoughtful details and clever techniques that truly elevate a room.

Based on one of our recent apartment projects, here are six of my favourite styling tips that you can try yourself to inject a dose of designer elegance into your home.

1. Master the Art of the Limited Colour Palette

One of the most effective tricks for creating a space that feels both relaxed and uncluttered is to stick to a limited, neutral colour palette. It might sound restrictive, but it’s a powerful tool for achieving a sophisticated and cohesive atmosphere.

In our recent project, we used just two main colours—a warm, inviting stone and a soft, muted blush. The magic, however, lies in the nuance. Within this core palette, we introduced other colours that were tonally similar. Think shades of cream, gentle greys, and earthy taupes. This creates a look that is rich and interesting, but never busy. The eye flows seamlessly from one area to the next without being distracted by jarring colours, which is a fantastic technique for making smaller rooms feel more spacious and airy.

By using this warm stone and muted blush scheme throughout the entire apartment, we cultivated a consistently restful and calm environment. It’s a testament to how a disciplined approach to colour can result in a truly serene living space.

2. Layer Up! Texture is Your Best Friend

“But won’t a narrow colour palette be boring?” This is a common concern, but the answer is a resounding no! The secret to making a neutral scheme sing is layering. Just because the colours are quiet doesn’t mean the room has to be.

We make sure to introduce an abundance of different fabrics and textures, all within the same tonal family. This is what truly brings a scheme to life, creating depth and tactile interest without adding clutter. In our project, the muted blush reappears in multiple forms: the plush velvet of the curtains, the soft weave of select sofa cushions, and it’s even echoed in the abstract brushstrokes of the artwork. Look closer, and you’ll see it again in the subtly patterned rug that grounds the room.

Think about the materials you can introduce: a chunky knit throw draped over a smooth leather chair, a linen lampshade next to a glossy ceramic vase, or a rough-sawn wooden coffee table on a soft wool rug. Using layers like this is the cornerstone of great interior styling; it pulls the entire look together and stops it from ever feeling flat or bland.

3. Weave in Subtle, Sophisticated Patterns

Pattern can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be loud to make a statement. The key is to choose patterns that complement, rather than compete with, each other.

In this lovely master bedroom, we confidently used two different patterns in varying sizes. To ensure the look remained elegant and harmonious, we kept a common thread between them: a soft, organic floral shape. By using a large-scale pattern on the bespoke, commissioned headboard and a smaller, more delicate version on the wallpaper or cushions, we created a look that is layered and complementary. This approach adds visual intrigue and a sense of bespoke luxury to the room. The custom headboard and bedframe, in particular, provide a truly unique focal point that defines the space.

4. Achieve That Boutique Hotel Look at Home

Who doesn’t love the feeling of walking into a luxurious hotel room? That sumptuously made bed, with its gorgeous pillows and crisp linens, invites you to relax and unwind. You can easily replicate this five-star feeling at home.

The secret is in the presentation. Instead of standard pillows, invest in extra-wide ones to make a real statement across the width of your bed. And here’s the crucial tip: stand them up against the headboard rather than laying them flat. This simple change instantly creates that stylish, professional hotel aesthetic.

Pay close attention to the small details. We sourced beautiful white bed linen with a delicate blush embroidered edging, a subtle nod to the room’s core colour palette. It’s these considered touches that make a scheme feel complete and professionally curated. It’s well worth taking that extra little bit of time to get it right.

5. Curate Your Accessories with Vignettes and Florals

Accessories are the finishing touches that tell your home’s story. A well-placed collection of objects, known as a vignette, can bring personality to any corner.

Faux flowers and botanicals have come a long way and are now an interior designer's secret weapon. They look fantastic all year round, require no maintenance, and can instantly brighten any spot. Here, we’ve created a simple vignette on a side table. By grouping some neutral cream and stone-coloured decorative accessories—like vases and sculptural objects—we’ve not only added interest but also cleverly echoed the organic pattern found in the wallpaper, creating another layer of cohesion.

6. Light Up Your World with Statement Pieces

Lighting is so much more than a practical necessity; it’s the jewellery of a room. A carefully chosen lamp can serve as a functional piece of art, adding a real wow factor to your home.

Don’t be afraid to choose a statement lamp base or a distinctive shade. In this bedroom, we selected gorgeous bedside lamps with sculptural bases. They were chosen specifically to work with the colour scheme, but their unique shape adds that little something extra, transforming them from simple light sources into key decorative elements. If a bold base feels like too much, consider a statement lampshade instead. These days, there are some truly excellent suppliers offering shades in a vast array of colours, patterns, and luxurious fabrics.
