A Townhouse Guest Room Transformation
In the charming Victorian townhouses that line the streets of Wiltshire and beyond, there often lies a hidden challenge: the forgotten room. It might be a second, smaller living room, a study that never quite found its purpose, or simply a space that the rhythm of family life has left behind. These rooms, full of potential, often become repositories for clutter, waiting for a new identity.
At Flippa Interiors, we relish the opportunity to breathe new life into such spaces. We recently undertook a project that perfectly encapsulates this challenge: transforming a tired, underutilised second living room into a multi-functional, stylish guest suite. The brief was clear and clever: create a beautiful bedroom that could be listed on Airbnb, generating income, while also serving as a private, comfortable holiday bolthole for our client’s university-aged son.
The goal was to craft a space that felt like a boutique hotel for paying guests yet retained a welcoming, personal feel for family. This is a delicate balance, and it’s where thoughtful design truly shines.
The Vision: Maximising Space and Style
The original room was, in a word, uninspired. It lacked a clear purpose and, as a result, was largely ignored by the family. Our first step was to completely rethink the layout. To succeed as a premium Airbnb listing and function as a proper retreat for a returning family member, an en-suite bathroom was non-negotiable.
Carving out a new bathroom within the footprint of a period property requires careful planning. We reconfigured the room's layout to create a dedicated, relatively spacious en-suite without compromising the integrity and flow of the main bedroom area. This single structural change was the cornerstone of the transformation, immediately elevating the room from a simple spare bedroom to a self-contained guest suite. This is a crucial element in modern Townhouse Guest Room Design, where privacy and convenience are paramount.
Crafting the Bedroom: A Study in Contemporary Comfort
With the new layout established, we turned our attention to the aesthetics. The brief called for an interior that was both stylish and contemporary, a look that would have broad appeal for Airbnb guests while feeling modern and fresh for a young adult.
We created a calm, neutral backdrop for the bedroom, allowing key design details to stand out. One of the most distinctive features is the lighting. We sourced on-trend, retro-inspired cage lamps, which not only add an industrial-chic character but also prove that high style doesn't always require a high budget. Suspending a feature light from a bespoke copper wall bracket creates a unique focal point beside the bed, freeing up space on the bedside table and adding a touch of bespoke design. This detail, a simple combination of metal and light, perfectly captures the room’s blend of period character and modern sensibility.
The room is now a serene and inviting space, furnished with comfortable pieces that feel both durable for guests and cosy for family. It’s a testament to the idea that a successful Airbnb Guestroom Design hinges on creating an experience, not just a place to sleep.
The En-suite: A Jewel Box of Colour and Texture
While the bedroom exudes a calm and collected feel, the en-suite is where we injected a dose of drama and personality. We painted the walls in a deep, confident blue. This bold colour choice immediately creates a sense of intimacy and luxury, cocooning you in the small space and making it feel special and deliberate.
The star of the show, however, is the splashback above the new sink. A mosaic of gleaming copper tiles catches the light beautifully, creating a warm, shimmering contrast against the cool blue walls. This choice was twofold: it links back to the copper details in the bedroom, creating a cohesive design language throughout the suite, and it adds a powerful touch of luxury and individuality. It’s a prime example of how a small area of a high-impact material can elevate an entire room.
To ground the space and add a contemporary twist, we selected a black and white diamond-patterned vinyl for the floor. This graphic choice is a modern classic, offering a striking visual counterpoint to the rich colour and metallic finishes. It’s also an incredibly practical solution for a bathroom—durable, water-resistant, and easy to maintain, which is essential for a high-traffic Airbnb rental.
The Result: A Dual-Purpose Success Story
The transformation is complete. The once-forgotten living room is now a hard-working, income-generating asset for our client. As an Airbnb listing, it offers guests a private, stylish, and comfortable stay that rivals any boutique hotel, complete with the all-important en-suite and unique design flourishes that guarantee five-star reviews.
Simultaneously, it flawlessly fulfils its second purpose. When her son returns from university, he has a private, grown-up space to call his own—a comfortable and stylish bolthole that feels a world away from a typical spare room.
This Wiltshire townhouse project is a perfect illustration of what we do best at Flippa Interiors: we see the hidden potential in every corner of a home. By reconfiguring the layout, layering carefully chosen materials, and focusing on unique details, we turned a neglected room into a valuable, versatile, and beautiful space that will be enjoyed by family and guests for years to come.
